the best underground church in the world

the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá

literally underground, the cathedral has served as a sanctuary for salt miners who exploited the area more than 500 years back, even before the spaniards came to COLOMBIA.

A cathedral was built in 1954 and another one – new age in design was completed in 1995.

Today, the cathedral is a spectacular church and booked solid for year ahead, as one of the most romantic churches to get married in.

It is a functioning church that receives as many as 3,000 visitors on Sundays, it has no bishop and therefore no official status as a cathedral in Catholicism.
