Damascus’ hero : Saladin the Great

This is a statue outside Damascus Gate of  Salah al-Dīn Yusuf ibn Ayyub.

He is better known as Saladin, who led

the Islamic opposition

to the third crusade and recaptured Palestine from the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Despite fighting in the medieval age of 1174-1193, Saladin was also famous for his nobility and mercy towards the losers of the battle.

He died in Damascus and is buried in the Ummayad mosque.
