Leh was an important stopover on trade routes along the Indus Valley between
Tibet to the east, Kashmir to the west.
Much of the trade between India and the Tibet region of China also passed through Leh until 1959, when fighting broke out between India and China. – according to Answers.com
There are several Tibetan craft markets in Leh today, including one for refugees.
